Stay Pura Vida

Welcome.

Two Costa Ricans meet.  About 99.9% of the time, they greet each other by saying “Pura Vida”.

It is a phrase you will encounter all the time.  What does it mean?

The phrase “Pura Vida” has been present in Costa Rica’s vocabulary for many, many years. The literal translation into English means “pure life” or “simple life”; however, its more than just a phrase . . . it is a way of life.

Depending on the context and the situation, it has many uses.  It is used as a greeting and as a farewell; you can use it for “I’m doing well” or “Everything’s cool”; you can use it for “Oh well!” or “That’s life!” It also can be used for “You’re welcome” or “No worries” or just about any exclamation like “That’s great!”

Costa Ricans are incredibly polite and courteous; therefore, shouting, confrontation and accusations are not considered to be acceptable behavior, especially in public. Even when protesting something that they don’t agree with, locals do so peacefully and without conflict.

Another term you will encounter is “Tico”.

Because Costa Ricans have a great sense of humor, the term “Tico” is rooted in how they play with the Spanish language. On occasion, Costa Ricans have the tendency to add the “tico” suffix to a certain word. It can be used to indicate an affectionate or ‘cute’ meaning.

Consequently, Tico is the nickname used among Costa Ricans as a reference to themselves.  It is not a negative term at all.  It is a friendly term.
